During the Civil War, the town of Woodbury became a local hot spot. During July of 1862, Confederate Col. Nathan B. Forrest marched through on their way to a rain in Murfreesboro. The raid waas successful with capturing around 1,200 Union soldiers and rescuing prisoners that included several Cannon County residents. By Janurary of 1863, Confederate Col. John B. Hutcheson’s Cavalry found themselves fighting against four Union regiments. Hutcheson stated “No live Yankee should come into this town.” When the fight was over and Hutcheson was killed, Union Capt. T.D. McClelland said this was “quite a brilliant little affair.”
