Congrats! You Discovered County Division

During the Civil War, DeKalb County was different than its surrounding areas. A large minority opposed secession and voted against it on June 8, 1861. However, slave owner and Congressman William B. Stokes who beat former Congressman and attorney John H. Savage in the last election in 1859, Stokes joined the Union while the opposed joined Savage in the Confederacy. After the war, Stokes was reelected to Congress and supported Republican Reconstruction policies which lead to him never receiving a vote again in DeKalb County.
