Congrats! You Discovered Ye Old Jail

This location served as the “Ye Old Jail” for Fentress County and is now home of the Chamber of Commerce. This building was designed by John Clemens, the father of Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain). He was one of the towns’ Commissioners who prepared plans for the first jail and courthouse. The plans for these buildings were in Clemons own handwriting and survived for well over 100 years. However, the jail was constructed in 1898 and is the oldest public buildings in the county. It served as a jail from 1898 until 1979.
