Congrats! You Discovered Bethlehem Church
Heart of Controversy is built on what one teacher believed to be a violation of freedom of speech. In 1861, as the secession debate raged across Tennessee, Mary Catherine Sproul was a teacher on the Bethlehem Church grounds. When pro-Union leader, Horace Maynard was set to give a speech in Livingston, Mary overhead people wanting to “riddle his hide” if he were to speak. Mary spoke up against this and raddled her students about their parent’s behavior. However, her speaking up lead to threats against her. Yet she was still able to teach at the school house.
