John T. Wilder, native of New York’s Catskill Mountains, joined the Union during the Civil War. After the battles of Chickamauga and Chattanooga, he resigned from the army and went home. After the war was over, he returned to Tennessee and began exploring the area’s iron and coal deposits. He then established steel mills and coal mines and created jobs for this area. He then built a home in Monterey and developed the 20 room Imperial Hotel in downtown Monterey. He died on October 20th, 1917.
