Baxter was formerly known as “Mine Lick”, but the name was changed in 1902 in honor of Jere Baxter, the builder of the Tennessee Central. Baxter became a great shipping point due to the railway. With the towns name change in 1902, Baxter did not offically become incorporated until 1915.
