In the late eighteenth century, travelers along the east-west road running across the land that became Putnam County were no doubt impressed with a strange monolith that stood near the Old Indian Trail. Located here from what was discovered as Limestone, that is not found in this area, stood a “dog shaped” structure of unknown origin and purpose. The area around the monolith became known as Standing Stone.
