Harvey Samuel Firestone Sr (December 20, 1868 – February 7, 1938) was an American businessman and the founder of the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company. He came across this gorge one day and was astonished by its beauty and he purchased the land and used the area for corporate retreats. In 1988, Firestone was acquired by Bridgestone, and left the land undeveloped. In 2014, with consulting with ‘The Nature Conservancy’ and collaborating on a forest management plan, decided to donated 5,763 acre parcel to ‘TNC’ and is the largest gifted land in Tennessee.
